🚽 Sewage Disposal

Proper sewage disposal is essential for protecting the environment, our drinking water, and everyone’s health in the Summer Village of Larkspur. To ensure all properties meet safety and environmental standards, Larkspur has a bylaw regulating how sewage and wastewater must be managed.

🚫 What’s Not Allowed:

    • You are not allowed to dispose of sewage directly onto the ground anywhere in Larkspur. This includes greywater and waste from RVs or outhouses.

    • All sewage systems must be CSA-approved and meet Alberta’s health and safety standards.

✅ What You Must Have:

Bylaw #18-4 requires all properties that:

    • Are being used as permanent residences or cottages,

    • Park RVs for more than 21 days per year, or

    • Have a water system, privy, or outhouse (even if the property is vacant),

...to have an approved sewage disposal system installed and maintained.

Approved systems include:

    • CSA-approved holding tanks

    • Disposal fields or treatment mounds built to provincial standards

Systems must be installed and operated according to the Alberta Safety Codes Act and the Alberta Private Sewage Systems Standard of Practice.

Inspections and Enforcement

Designated Officers have the authority to inspect properties to ensure compliance. If your system is non-compliant:

    • You may receive an order to fix, replace, or remove it.

    • You may also face fines up to $500 for a first offence, with increased penalties for repeat violations.

    • Ongoing violations can lead to daily fines and charges added to your property tax bill.
