🔥 FireSmart: Protecting Your Property from Wildfire
Is your property FireSmart? FireSmart is all about reducing the risk of wildfires by identifying and addressing fire hazards before they become a threat. Prevention is far easier—and far less costly—than dealing with the consequences of a fire.
What You Need to Know:
-
Every property owner is responsible for identifying and eliminating fire hazards on their property.
-
We all share responsibility for keeping municipal reserve areas safe—if you notice hazards in these shared spaces, please report them to the CAO at [email protected].
-
Fire prevention is a year-round commitment, but spring and fall cleanups are especially important. Even if you cleaned up well in the fall, there's always more debris come spring!
How to Report a Fire:
-
Call 911 – Your call will be directed to the Westlock County Fire Hall.
-
Then contact CAO Kim Bancroft at 780-239-7323 and one of your Council Members as soon as possible.
FireSmart Tips for Your Property:
-
Download the FireSmart Begins at Home app and do a self-assessment of your structure’s ignition zone.
-
Clear pine needles and dry leaves within at least 1.5 metres of your home's foundation—and up to 10 metres if possible.
-
Clean roof and gutters regularly.
-
Move firewood at least 10 metres away from buildings.
-
Sweep and rake leaves from porches, decks, sheds, and underneath play structures.
-
Mow grass to no more than 10 cm in height.
-
Store gas cans and propane tanks safely away from your home—never indoors.
-
Remove clutter and store flammable items away from decks and porches.
