🔥 Fire Advisories: Know Before You Burn
Planning to enjoy a campfire? Before lighting it, it’s your responsibility to check the current fire danger rating. The Summer Village of Larkspur is located within Alberta’s Forest Protection Area (FPA), which means we follow the provincial fire rating—or a stricter one if local conditions require it.
How to Check the Fire Rating:
Larkspur uses two main tools to communicate the current fire status:
-
Fire Signs in the Village
Check the fire signs posted around the Summer Village frequently—they’re updated regularly during fire season. -

🔥 Understanding Fire Advisory Levels:
Fire Level | What It Means |
---|---|
No Restriction | Fire permits are required (except for campfires). Safe campfires are allowed in campgrounds and designated areas. |
Fire Advisory | Fire danger is rising. Campfires still allowed, but be cautious—restrictions may follow. Fire permits may be limited. |
Fire Restriction | No open fires or charcoal BBQs in backcountry. Campfires allowed only in fire rings in designated campgrounds. Gas/propane appliances are OK. Fire permits suspended. |
Fire Ban | All campfires prohibited (even in campgrounds). Only gas/propane stoves and fire pits are allowed. All fire permits are cancelled. |
Fire Ban with OHV Prohibited | Same as a Fire Ban, but Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) are also banned on public lands. |
Forest Area Closure | Extreme danger. Public access is restricted—portions of the forest may be closed for safety. |
🔥 Campfire Safety Tips
SOAK IT. STIR IT. SOAK IT AGAIN.
-
-
Let your fire burn down before putting it out.
-
Spread the embers, soak thoroughly with water or cover with dirt, then stir.
-
Expose any material still burning. Soak and stir again until there’s no smoke or heat.
-
A cool fire is a dead fire—if you can still feel heat, you’re not done.
-
Never bury your fire. Embers can smolder underground and reignite days later.
-
🔺 Note: Long weekends are a high-risk time for human-caused wildfires. Please take extra care.
By staying informed and practicing fire safety, we can help protect our homes, our forest, and our community. Let’s all do our part to keep Larkspur safe.
