🛶 Docks: Use the Shoreline Responsibly

Lake access is one of the greatest parts of life in Larkspur—but it comes with responsibilities. If you're planning to use a dock or boat lift, especially one that touches municipal reserve land or enters the lakebed, it's important to follow the rules set out in Bylaw 23-03.

Do I Need Permission?

Yes. All temporary seasonal docks and lifts placed on municipal reserve lands or extending into the lake must meet specific conditions:

  • You must be a waterfront or semi-waterfront holder (a property owner directly adjacent to the shoreline or to a municipal reserve next to the lake).

  • You must comply with the Disturbance Standard from Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) and/or the Summer Village's approved dock plans.

  • Back lot owners may only install docks in a Community Reserve and must follow the plan approved by the Summer Village and AEP.

Permanent docks are not allowed under any circumstances.

🗺️ Community Reserves & Captains

  • If you share a Community Reserve, the semi-waterfront holders are collectively responsible for following the approved dock layout.

  • Each Community Reserve will have a Community Reserve Captain, appointed to help coordinate dock placement and report issues.

  • If you're unsure about placement or need help, your Reserve Captain or the CAO can assist.

📅 Seasonal Timing

  • Docks and lifts can be in place between May 15 and September 15 each year.

  • Storage of docks and lifts on municipal reserve lands outside of this timeframe must comply with the Use of Public Lands Bylaw and requires permission.

⚠️ Liability & Enforcement

  • Property owners are fully responsible for any injury or damage involving their dock or lift, even if someone else uses it.

  • Violations of the bylaw may result in fines or removal of the dock or lift, and penalties may also be issued by Alberta Environment and Parks if the rules aren't followed.
