🚤 Boat Safety: Be Smart on the Water

A day on the lake is one of the best parts of life in Larkspur—but safety should always come first. Whether you're paddling a kayak or cruising in a motorboat, it's your responsibility to keep yourself, your passengers, and your fellow lake users safe.

đź“‹ Know the Rules

  • All operators of powered boats must carry a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (or equivalent proof of competency). It’s the law across Canada.

  • Life jackets or PFDs must be on board for every person, and they must be readily accessible and properly sized.

  • Every boat must carry required safety equipment, such as a whistle or horn, bailing device, flashlight, and watertight flashlight (for boats operated at night or in low visibility).

  • Follow posted speed limits and observe no-wake zones near shorelines and docks.

  • Do not operate any watercraft under the influence of drugs or alcohol—it's dangerous and illegal.

Use Good Judgment

  • Always check the weather forecast before heading out.

  • Never overload your boat beyond its capacity.

  • Keep an eye out for swimmers, paddleboarders, and smaller craft—they can be hard to see.

  • Leave a float plan—let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return.

Respect the Shoreline

  • Reduce your speed near shore to prevent wake damage to docks, wildlife habitat, and other boats.

  • Avoid disturbing wildlife and nesting birds along the shoreline.

  • Be cautious around weed beds and shallow areas—these are important for lake health and fish habitat.
